Welcome to CAA!
Classical Arts Atelier was created to give teens and young adults the technical skills needed to create realistic drawings and paintings through consecutive skill-based lessons similar to those used in the 19th century at a French Atelier.
What is Classical Drawing and Painting?
Classical studio art classes focus on essential and fundamental skills such as line, shape (proportion), form, and light and shadow (value) using a variety of historically proven techniques. Skills are taught using a systematized method that allows for students to progress without frustration. Students become proficient through repetition, practice, and study. The focus in classical art allows students to gain a firm skill set for a career in the arts, build a portfolio of work, or improve upon abilities to eventually draw and paint like a master.
One of the most common misconceptions about artists such as Pablo Picasso, Leonardo DaVinci and Vincent Van Gogh is that they were born with talent and the intrinsic ability to draw and paint. However, most masters of the past trained using classical drawing and painting methods that have been passed down through the generations. These skills can be learned by anyone willing to put in the time and practice.
The classes are available for ALL skill levels.

Why Study Classical Methods?
Classical drawing and painting courses focus on the historical techniques that have been used for hundreds of years to create masterful works of art. After the foundations are mastered, students will have this skillset readily available to use when creating works of art, attending art school or exploring a career in the arts.
How do the classes work?
When attending a session, your instructor will break down complex drawing skills by using an easy-to-understand step-by-step method that allows students to progress even if they have no drawing or painting experience. You may make your own schedule (once or twice a week) or try a drop-in class.
Where and when do I attend class?
Classes are currently held on Wednesdsays from 3:15-4:45 at the University of the Arts. You are welcome to attend as little or as much as you like. If you would like to request a different time or day, please email info@caa-philly.com or text 267-754-2421.
